I used to love reading books on my Surface Pro but since buying a new one and finding out there is no longer Windows app available, I've been forced to use the desktop application. Let me tell you straight up - the Kindle application for PC is an absolute joke.
Where to start? The Interface UI - the interface is pathetic. That means you can forget about reading in a dark room or before bed from this application. There is no way to make the "page" - I put the word in inverted commas because it's more like a tiny strip down the middle of the screen - do anything like fill the screen, even in "full screen" mode, no matter which way you orient your device or what options you try.
Even the way the UI looks is what you'd expect from the very lamest freeware, like something that was made 20 years ago and has hardly been updated since. Features - you don't get any of the features they advertise, they seem to be reserved for users of other platforms.
You'll be lucky if you can manage half a page of text per screen. Then there is the complete lack of right-click functionality, which you'd expect could be really handy in an application like this. Honestly, though, I can't think of the last time I encountered a software application with no right-click functionality at all. Even Notepad has a right-click menu. You get a limited one in the Library but nothing at all on the reading side. Overall - Amazon should be ashamed and embarrassed to offer something so clearly useless to their customers.
When you compare it to the Windows 8 Metro app or any phone app, it simply doesn't measure up. It's so bad that it got me looking at the Kobo app, which is everything this application is not - the Kobo app feels modern and slick and looks like it will be a joy to use as an eReader.
It's also got a great built-in store that makes it dead simple to buy books. It's so much better that, after thinking about it long and hard, I've decided that once I finish the books I have, I'm going to get myself a Kobo and sell my Kindle on eBay.
I won't put up with being treated like a second-class citizen and you shouldn't, either. The interface is non-intuitive and difficult. I rather enjoy reading than being frustrated by this app. As a owner of two Fire TVs and two Kindle Fires, this app makes me feel absolutely disrespected as a customer. It's obvious when Amazon doesn't care about a user base because they release apps like this.
It's broken, it runs poorly, and it's lacking in features. Compare this app to what you'll find on iOS and there's a huge disparity. The Kindle for PC app is flat out atrocious.

I realize that Amazon would prefer to sell books to those that own Kindles, but why support those features in the world on IOS and Android but leave the PC version from the store so crippled?
Doesn't make sense because I'm sure it is costing Amazon book sales. I became involved with this free Kindle download so I could make use of the various functions which can make reading easier on the eyes.
It was far beyond a mere blue light problem. I thought I would re-buy one of my favorite technical books in the Kindle format and download the free app. Then work with various screen lighting and font sizes. OMG how well it worked. I could increase the text size, which saved getting prescription reading glasses each eye is different and without paying for the top of the line glare treatments on glasses which scratch up, etc.
But most of all, this app introduced me to using a dark reader for books. I had never heard of it before. The page backgrounds become black, and the print white. What an improvement. I have since moved on to using a Dark Reader in my browser. Between the Kindle download and the browser one, my eyes are no longer exhausted and nonfunctional after reading anything all day long. This is like a miracle. I just don't know why so few people know about the use of dark readers. Anyways, thank you Kindle!

This app would benefit from a zoom function, when viewing comic books on it or illustrations in general as the way they look on a PC monitor or laptop screen it is always too small to read the captions or properly pick out the detail of each image.
The app has very few features and is very basic, in how it can be used. Would work ok on a good sized tablet, and in general it's fine for reading books with flowing text - but any books with pictures severely show up the limitations of this product.
I know it is free to download, and Amazon as a company probably don't want to give as many features as an actual physical Kindle, but I feel less inclined to purchase ebooks when I know that I will have a difficult experience reading some of them with this app.
Having been well used to dedicated Kindle readers, and Kindle reader apps on various Android machines for many years, I am able to give an accurate comparison of this "programme" for a Windows PC. It is not an "app", because, for some reason Windows 10 does not allow the Kindle reader for an app, as does Android. I can only surmise this is a "political" refusal. Consequently, you need to download the Kindle app from Amazon - which is not an easy task. Once set-up, it does behave somewhat like the Android Kindle app, but it has some annoying differences.
It requires 2 clicks on the Windows 10 Start icon before it opens. It's like it needs to be reminded that it has a job to do. One click on the Start icon is not enough. It does register all your library books well, and displays them well.
Left-clicking is not enough. It has 3 background colours for the opened book - white, black or sepia, but no green, like the Android app not a problem - of which the white happens to be GREY. There is a slightly different handling of bookmarks, but it doesn't take much effort to get used to clicking the almost invisible button in the right margin to open the list.
Reading the books is as you would expect. In conclusion, this Kindle Reader for a PC does not handle smoothly like the Android app, but once you get used to it, it works well enough, and I do use it a lot on my laptop.
Report abuse. This would be a really fabulous app if only I could delete books from the library all menu. I move titles to imported collections then try and delete the book from the app and I can find no way to do this so the app is cluttered with titles I have read and no longer want showing on the menu.
I really like being able to read my books on my PC as it is more comfortable than holding my Kindle since I developed arthritis in my fingers. I own an original Kindle and in many ways I prefer it because the books just get moved into a collection and are removed from the menu thus reducing the number of books I have to scroll through to find books I haven't read. This app needs to be more user friendly and allow you to manipulate the books more easily. This software is terrible, it doesn't have one of the most basic feature requirements which is to zoom in on the page like you can easily do with a PDF and then scroll up and down to read a page, books that have images or charts or symbols are unreadable, it locks the height of the page to the height of your screen which is not useful, although it has a option to increase the text size but this only works on literature books, not study text books.
Completely useless don't bother buying any ebooks for studying if you hope to use this, math's symbols don't display properly, they either have alignment issues or display invalid characters. I can't understand how amazon with all its resources hasn't asked their development team to do something about this as a priority and make it work, Adobe managed to do it fine with PDFs so it can be done perfectly.
I won't be buying anymore ebooks, very disappointing. From my personal point of view this was not a good experience, because evolution is overdue to provide proper integration with the Real World.
The product file names do not show title or author and these are essential to manage a collection when off-line. Needs regular online account management to negate the "furthest page read" debacle whereby a visit to the index at the back relocates the "furthest page read".
The conversions are not acceptable in most cases because the relationship to the book book is lost. The proper way to do this is to show the page number fore and aft of each page. Ready reference of the subject is easy. Kindle changed the way of life. Fancy but not useful. Interface is pretty and that's pretty much it. Not all ebooks show up and it's awful to read. Plus because it is all cloud you can't remove the ebooks for your PC so you put them on your Kobo So buy a Kindle to read Kindle ebooks or you won't manage to read them at all!
This app blows. Windows users get a brutally inefficient fascimile. Just the worst, most inept app out there for this platform. An insul t, really. The touch interface is a joke. The pen support is an exercise in futility - it turns the pages rather than highlights. Absolutely mind bogglingly awful. Great reader and syncing tool. Great for syncing your library with the Kindle device and on Windows.
Everything is great, but the problem I had is that the app displays only the purchased book, not the documents you've manually sent to the device. It is a big advantage to be able to access titles and stories from around the world.
